Tributes Pour In for Former PM Dr. Manmohan Singh on His Birth Anniversary; Remembered as Architect of Economic Reforms and Symbol of Integrity

Former Prime Minister of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh, was born on September 26, 1932. He served as the country’s Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014. A respected economist, Dr. Singh is widely credited with spearheading India’s economic liberalization as Finance Minister during the tenure of then-Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao.

On Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to Dr. Singh on his birth anniversary, recalling his contributions in various capacities to the nation. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Modi wrote:

“Tributes to former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh Ji on his birth anniversary. We remember his contributions to the country during his long public life.”

Dr. Singh led the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government from 2004 to 2014, and his term as Finance Minister from 1991 to 1996 under Narasimha Rao is remembered as a pivotal phase when India initiated sweeping economic reforms.

He was born in Gah village, Punjab (now in Pakistan), and passed away on December 26, 2024.

The Indian National Congress also paid homage to the former Prime Minister on his birth anniversary. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, in a post on X, honored Dr. Singh’s legacy, saying:

“We remember the contribution of former PM Dr. Manmohan Singh in nation-building. He was the architect of India’s economic transformation. A man of humility and intelligence, he treated everyone with dignity and let his work speak louder than words.”

Kharge further added:

“His vision for economic reform opened new avenues of opportunity, created a thriving middle class, and lifted countless families out of poverty. He believed deeply in fairness and inclusivity, ensuring that growth and compassion went hand-in-hand through welfare measures that impacted millions.”

“His leadership showed us that integrity in public life is not only possible but powerful. For generations of Indians, he will remain an enduring symbol of honesty, wisdom, and selfless service to the nation. His legacy of striving for a stronger and more inclusive India lives on.”
