India Backs Sri Lanka’s Northern Revival with Major Investment in Jaffna Port

In a significant boost to India–Sri Lanka ties and regional development, Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has announced substantial Indian assistance for upgrading the Kankesanthurai (KKS) Port in Jaffna. On Friday, he confirmed that India has agreed to provide financial support worth USD 60 million for the modernization of the strategically located northern port.

Addressing a public gathering near Jaffna—widely regarded as the cultural heartland of Sri Lanka’s Tamil community—President Dissanayake highlighted the region’s vast potential for economic and tourism-led growth, citing its scenic coastline and untapped attractions.

India’s $60 Million Support for KKS Port

The Sri Lankan President stated that the Indian government has approved a grant of USD 60 million (approximately ₹500 crore) to revamp the Kankesanthurai Port.

• Key Objective: The funding will be used to upgrade port infrastructure to meet international standards.
• Planned Upgrades: The project includes deepening the harbor through dredging, constructing new breakwaters, and developing modern terminals to improve vessel movement.
• Tourism and Connectivity: Once upgraded, the port is expected to strengthen ferry services and cruise tourism between India and Sri Lanka, especially given Jaffna’s coastal appeal.

President Dissanayake on Northern Development

Dissanayake also spoke about parallel plans to address shortcomings at the Palaly Airport and move ahead with its renovation. Emphasizing swift action, he said work at the KKS Port would begin soon with India’s financial backing. He added that his government has already launched a broader development program aimed at improving infrastructure and living standards across Sri Lanka’s Northern Province.

Strengthening India–Sri Lanka Relations

The port modernization project aligns closely with India’s “Neighbourhood First” policy and underscores New Delhi’s commitment to supporting Sri Lanka’s recovery and growth.
