Assam Elections: CM Himanta’s Major Poll Promise

Ahead of the Assam Assembly elections, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has made a major electoral promise, announcing that sugar and pulses will be distributed free of cost to beneficiaries if the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) forms the government again in the state.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has promised that if the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) returns to power for a third consecutive term, ration card holders will receive sugar, pulses, and salt free of cost. The announcement strengthens the state government’s welfare push ahead of the elections. Addressing an official rally in Dhemaji, the Chief Minister said that from January, ration card holders would be able to get one kilogram each of pulses, sugar, and salt for ₹100.

He added that if people help the BJP-led government secure victory in the upcoming elections, these essential items would be delivered to their homes free of charge. Sarma’s announcement comes ahead of the Assam Assembly elections, which are likely to be held in March–April. The BJP-led government has been in power in the state since 2016.

Separately, Himanta Biswa Sarma said he met Union Home Minister Amit Shah to discuss seat-sharing arrangements among National Democratic Alliance (NDA) partners for the upcoming Assembly elections. Speaking to reporters during an official event, Sarma said the BJP could finalize seat-sharing with the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and other smaller NDA allies by February 15. Earlier, he had said the alliance talks were expected to conclude by January 15.

“Our seat-sharing arrangements and other alliance-related details will be finalized by February 15. I met the Union Home Minister last night to discuss this. BPF chief Hagrama Mohilary was also present during the meeting,” the Chief Minister said.

He also revealed that United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) president Pramod Boro had met Amit Shah earlier. Sarma traveled to Delhi by a special flight on Tuesday and returned on Wednesday morning. He added that he had a detailed discussion with AGP president Atul Bora and expressed confidence that a mutually agreeable seat-sharing formula would be finalized smoothly, without any complications.
