Kerala Election 2026: Attack on Shashi Tharoor’s Convoy During Campaign, Case Filed Against Five
On Friday night in Kerala’s Malappuram district, unidentified attackers allegedly targeted the convoy of senior Congress leader and MP Shashi Tharoor. The incident occurred when Tharoor had arrived in the Wandoor area to campaign in support of party candidate A. P. Anil Kumar for the upcoming elections.
Attack on Shashi Tharoor’s Convoy During Election Campaign in Kerala
Senior Congress leader and MP Shashi Tharoor’s convoy was allegedly attacked by unidentified individuals on Friday night in Malappuram district, Kerala. The incident took place when Tharoor had arrived in the Wandoor area to campaign in support of party candidate A. P. Anil Kumar for the upcoming elections.
According to reports, a group of people riding motorcycles stopped the convoy and began arguing with Tharoor’s security gunman, allegedly using abusive language. The situation escalated, and the gunman was reportedly assaulted. The complaint in the case was filed by the gunman himself.
Group Allegedly Followed and Attacked the Convoy
Authorities said that a group of individuals allegedly followed Tharoor’s convoy and attempted to attack his vehicle. The group reportedly shouted abuses and tried to confront the MP, but the security gunman intervened to prevent the situation from escalating further.
One Arrested, Others Detained
Police confirmed that one person who stopped Tharoor’s car has been arrested in connection with the incident. The accused has been identified as Umar, a resident of Kalikavu in Malappuram district.
In addition, two other individuals have been taken into custody for questioning. Police have also seized two cars believed to have been used by the group that intercepted the convoy. A case has been registered against five individuals.
The incident reportedly occurred around 7 PM in Chellithode, Wandoor, where Tharoor had arrived to campaign for A. P. Anil Kumar.
Complaint Filed by Security Gunman
In his complaint to the Wandoor Police, the gunman alleged that a group of individuals traveling in a car stopped their vehicle and verbally abused him. The group then reportedly followed Tharoor’s car and forced it to stop. When the individuals allegedly attempted to assault Tharoor and used abusive language, the gunman intervened, after which he was also physically attacked.
Investigation Underway
Police said it is still unclear whether the attack was motivated by political rivalry or part of a planned conspiracy. However, officials suspect that the attackers may have intended to create a disturbance during the election campaign.
The suspects are currently being interrogated, and authorities say the exact motive behind the incident will become clear only after detailed questioning of all those involved.
