Deadly Crane Accident in Thailand: At Least 19 Killed as Construction Crane Falls on Passenger Train
A tragic and highly unusual train accident has occurred in Thailand, leaving at least 19 people dead and over 80 injured. A passenger train traveling from Bangkok to the northeastern region of the country was struck by a massive construction crane, which collapsed onto the train’s carriages.
According to local police, the incident took place while the train was moving along its scheduled route. The crane, part of a construction project near the railway tracks, suddenly toppled over and landed directly on the train. The train was en route from Bangkok to Ubon Ratchathani province when the accident occurred in Sikhio district, Nakhon Ratchasima, approximately 230 km northeast of the capital, on Wednesday morning.
Authorities reported that debris from the crane trapped additional victims, and rescue teams are still working to recover them. The crane was part of a high-speed rail project, and its fall caused one of the train carriages to derail and catch fire. The fire has now been extinguished, and emergency operations are ongoing.
Thailand’s Transport Minister, Pipat Ratchakitprakarn, confirmed that 195 passengers were on board and announced that a full investigation into the accident has been ordered. Early reports suggest potential safety protocol violations at the construction site. Police are also examining whether the company operating the crane had adequate safety measures in place.
