U.S. Deploys Two Nuclear Submarines Amid Geopolitical Tensions with Russia
In recent developments, the United States has deployed two nuclear submarines to strategic locations, a move reminiscent of Cold War-era tactics. This strategy follows a response to former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev’s comments, where he addressed U.S. President Donald Trump’s “dead economy” jibe. Trump had ordered this deployment as a countermeasure to Moscow’s defiance, which came after his threats of tariffs and sanctions failed to yield results. This order was given just after Medvedev warned Trump about the “Dead Hand” strategy, a Cold War-era automatic or semi-automatic nuclear weapon control system that would allow a retaliatory strike even if the country’s leadership was destroyed.
Russia’s Response: Adequate Submarines to Counter U.S. Deployment
In response to the U.S. action, a Russian parliament member stated that Russia has sufficient nuclear submarines in the oceans to deal with the American submarines. According to senior Russian lawmaker Viktor Vodolatsky, “Russia has far more nuclear submarines in the world’s oceans than the U.S., and those submarines that President Trump has ordered to be sent to specific regions have long been under American control. Therefore, there is no need for Russia to respond to the U.S. leader’s comments regarding these submarines.”
Earlier, Trump had posted on Truth Social that he had ordered the redeployment of U.S. submarines to strategic areas in response to “provocative statements” by Medvedev, who also serves as the Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council.
U.S. Submarine Deployment and Tensions
Vodolatsky remarked, “Let the U.S. submarines go; they have long been targets.” He further emphasized, “There needs to be a basic understanding between Russia and the U.S. so that the entire world can calm down and stop discussing the beginning of a Third World War.”
Meanwhile, Fyodor Lukyanov, the editor-in-chief of Russia in Global Affairs magazine, suggested that Trump’s comments about nuclear submarines should not be taken too seriously. Speaking to a local news channel, RBC TV, Lukyanov said, “As we know, Trump runs his own channel and often gives emotional, human, and instinctive reactions. I believe the U.S. Armed Forces and Navy will read it with great surprise. If this exchange of thoughts continues and Trump remains entangled in it, he might have to take some action. In my opinion, for now, it is just words.”
Stock Market Reaction and U.S. Diplomatic Stance
After Trump’s statements, the Moscow Exchange Index dropped by 2,709.26 points (0.99%) at 8:01 PM Moscow time (10:31 PM IST) on Friday.
Earlier, responding to a media question about U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s recent interview with Fox News, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that Russia agreed with the U.S. administration on avoiding direct military conflict between Moscow and Washington. Lavrov said, “While Europeans are pressuring to include Ukraine into NATO and preparing for potential conflict with Russia, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio recently took a responsible stance, clearly stating that the United States and Russia should avoid direct military confrontation. We fully agree with this position. This shared understanding has been strengthened through constructive Russian-American dialogue.”
